« Monika was a student at The Culinary Academy at Backsberg near Franschhoek in the Western Cape, South Africa. We run a boarding house for students from the Academy. Monika also resided with us. We share a kitchen with the students. Right from the beginning it was quite clear that cooking was not a mundane job for Monika. Every meal was planned with passion. New recipes were tested every evening. We decided to ask Monika to do our household cooking (dinners) four days per week. Monika planned the menu and bought the ingredients. She prepared the meal, set the table, choose the wine then we dined like kings. Each dinner was like a work of art. The food was delicious. But far more important was the talk over dinner. With enthusiasm, Monika could explain every taste or method or combination of texture, colour, taste and aroma. Dinners became a fun event. It was a sad day when her theoretical studies ended and she had to move to Cape Town. We still talk about the wonderful three months with our ‘Hungarian Chef.’ Monika is not only a superb chef.
